Nuwan Thushara withdraws case as IPL nears end

By Bhagya Silva

Sri Lankan cricketer Nuwan Thushara yesterday withdrew the plaint he had filed before the Colombo District Court seeking an interim injunction compelling Sri Lanka Cricket to issue him a “No Objection Certificate” to enable his participation in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) and other international premier league tournaments.

When the matter was taken up, Senior Attorney GG Arulpragasam appearing for Thushara informed court that several matches of the IPL tournament had already been concluded and his client no longer wished to proceed with the court procedure.

Thushara accordingly sought permission to withdraw the plaint.

Appearing on behalf of Sri Lanka Cricket, counsel informed court that the Chief Executive Officer of Sri Lanka Cricket had stated that based on the recommendations and position of the team Selection Committee (of Sri Lanka Cricket) the issuance of the No Objection Certificate had been refused as Thushara had not satisfactorily passed a physical fitness test prescribed by Sri Lanka Cricket.

The court thereafter granted leave to withdraw the plaint and subsequently dismissed the case.
