Kandy SC out of club Sevens

The inter club rugby Sevens will be worked off only in Colombo as Kandy Sports Club will not take part in the tournament after failing to confirm participation before the deadline.

This year’s tournament will also feature the participation of an international club side from Dubai, providing local players with the opportunity to compete against overseas opposition.

The first leg of the tournament will take place on March 21 and 22 at Longdon Place while the second leg will be worked off on March 28 and 29 at the Race Course ground.

Kandy SC had requested permission to participate only in the Kandy leg of the series due to heavy cost in travel and accommodation to Colombo but Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) made it clear that all participating teams were required to compete in both legs of the series or withdraw entirely.

The Sevens series will also play a key role in identifying players for the national squad as the country prepares for the upcoming Asian Rugby Sevens which will be staged in China and Sri Lanka plus the much important Asian Games taking place later this year in Nagoya Japan.

The national Sevens players will be contracted by Sri Lanka Rugby starting from this year.
