Hong Kong retain Asian Sevens trophy

By Shamseer Jaleel

Hong Kong underlined their dominance in Asian rugby by securing the Asia Rugby Sevens Trophy for a record seventh consecutive time after an emphatic 45-9 victory over South Korea at the Hong Kong Football Club grounds in Causeway Bay.

What made the achievement even more impressive was that Hong Kong accomplished the feat while fielding a largely second-string squad, with several of their leading players currently focused on preparations for the Rugby World Cup 2027 qualification campaign.

Despite the absence of many established stars, the hosts displayed exceptional depth, skill and composure throughout the tournament.

Hong Kong had earlier survived a stern challenge from a virtual Sri Lankan second string side in Colombo, edging out the home team 15-14 with a dramatic late try.

They followed up that narrow escape with a commanding display against South Korea, running in a series of well-executed tries to seal a convincing 45-9 triumph and successfully defend their regional title.

Tournament results:

Hong Kong beat Sri Lanka 15-14

Hong Kong beat South Korea 45-9

Remaining fixture:

South Korea vs Sri Lanka (June 13)
