Antonians eye strong start for Plate

St. Anthony’s College will launch their Plate Segment campaign of the Schools Under-19 Rugby League when they host Thurstan College at the Nittawela Rugby Stadium on Friday.

Kick-off is scheduled for 4 pm with both teams eager to begin the second phase of the competition on a positive note.

The Antonians endured a difficult first round, managing only a single victory against Lumbini College while suffering defeats in their remaining four matches. Despite the results, the Katugastota outfit displayed flashes of promise, particularly through their powerful forward pack which has been one of their strongest assets throughout the season.

Led by skipper Vimukthi Kodikara and coached by Saliya Kumara, the Antonians will be determined to turn their fortunes around. They enter the Plate Segment without any carry-forward points after losing out in the group standings to Sumangala, who advanced ahead of them.

Thurstan meanwhile arrive in Kandy with plenty of confidence following an impressive group-stage performance. The Colombo school recorded notable victories over traditional rugby powerhouses S. Thomas’ College and Kingswood College, establishing themselves as one of the more dangerous sides in the Plate competition.

Under the guidance of former Sri Lanka Sevens coach Shamly Nawas and captained by Ahad Sally, Thurstan have developed into a well-balanced outfit capable of troubling any opposition. Their attacking flair and disciplined defence have been key factors behind their success this season.

With the Antonians seeking redemption and Thurstan looking to continue their winning momentum, rugby fans can expect a good game.
