Sri Lanka’s javelin heroes, Sumeda Ranasingha and Rumesh Tharanga, are set to compete today in the Group ‘A’ and ‘B’ qualification rounds at the 20th World Athletic Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
A total of 37 athletes from around the world will compete in the men’s javelin qualification round with Sumeda Ranasingha participating in Group ‘A’ and Rumesh Tharanga in Group ‘B’. Both athletes secured eligibility to represent Sri Lanka at the Tokyo World Athletic Championship by surpassing the IAAF World Athletic 2025 Tokyo qualifying standards.
Sumeda threw a distance of 85.78m and Rumesh recorded a throw of 86.50m in their respective events.
In addition to the javelin duo, Sri Lanka’s sprinter Nadeesha Ramanayake represented the country in the women’s 400m event. Despite her efforts, she finished eighth in the preliminary round with a timing of 53.63 seconds, falling short of qualifying for the semi-finals.
