28th February (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lankan sports fans have a high-stakes weekend ahead, with crucial Premier League fixtures and decisive matches in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Super Eights stage. With qualification scenarios coming into play in cricket and important league points on offer in football, there is plenty riding on the next two days.
The English Premier League returns on Saturday, February 28, with two matches under the lights.
At 8.30 pm, Liverpool host West Ham, with the home side looking to maintain pressure in the race for European qualification. Later at 11.00 pm, Leeds face Manchester City, as City continue their push at the top end of the table.
Sunday, March 1, brings two more fixtures. Manchester United meet Crystal Palace at 7.30 pm, before the weekend concludes with a London derby at 10.00 pm, when Arsenal take on Chelsea — a fixture that traditionally carries added intensity.
Cricket takes centre stage locally on Saturday evening, when Sri Lanka face Pakistan in the 50th match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at Pallekele, starting at 7.00 pm.
The qualification equation adds further drama. Pakistan must defeat Sri Lanka by more than 65 runs, or chase down a target in approximately 13 overs, to improve their net run rate sufficiently to remain in contention for the semi-finals.
On Sunday, attention shifts to India for two key Super Eights encounters.
At 3.00 pm, Zimbabwe take on South Africa in Delhi.
Later at 7.00 pm, India meet West Indies at Eden Gardens in what is effectively a knockout match, with the winner advancing to the semi-finals.
With margins tight and net run rate potentially decisive, every over could prove important.
