In what can easily be termed the unkindest cut of all, the so-called Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association (SLSCA) has told two schools, Sri Sumangala College, Hikkaduwa and Henegama Central College that their Under-19 Division Two Tier B final will not be worked off after they turned up for the contest and protested that the venue in Kurunegala was a hellhole.
The Daily Mirror was told that both Sri Sumangala and Henegama Central refused to play the final on a ground that was fit for cattle grazing totally incompatible for a cricket match that also exposed the players to dangers.
The venue was decided by the SLSCA and even the umpires had recorded it that the venue was not suitable for a match.
Two weeks have gone by and the final was not played depriving the players of both schools from a well-deserved trophy.
An official of Sri Sumangala said they were told by the SLSCA that there will be no final and the two teams were declared joined champs.
The SLSCA is yet to clarify the matter officially and attempts by the Daily Mirror to reach out to them proved futile.
