Sri Lanka to send 164-member contingent for Birmingham Commonwealth Games

The Commonwealth Games Association of Sri Lanka (CGASL) has decided to send a 164-member contingent for the 24th Commonwealth Games to be held in Birmingham, England from July 28 to August 8.  


Sri Lanka will be participating in 15 disciplines with 114 athletes (54 men and 60 women) in addition to team officials and supporting staff comprising 51.  


The Chef de Mission of the Sri Lanka contingent is a veteran sports administrator Maj. Gen. Dampath Fernando (rtd) while the Deputy Chef de Mission is a retired commissioner of the Prisons Department Gamini Jayasinghe, CGASL president Suresh Subramaniam revealed at a press conference.  


The Sri Lanka contingent will be provided food and accommodation by the Games organisers free of charge while the players and officials will be staying in four locations in London and Birmingham universities.  
Sri Lanka is expecting medals in weightlifting, wrestling, gymnastics and judo.  


At the last Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast in 2018 Sri Lanka were represented by 79 athletes in 13 disciplines. Sri Lanka were able to win six medals in weighlifting and boxing.
