Shabeer Asgerally passes away

A onetime household name in domestic cricket, Shabeer Asgerally passed away yesterday and his funeral took place on the same day at the Kuppiyawatta burial ground.

Asgerally was one of those borderline cricketers of the 1970s who was a national poolist but could not make it to the Sri Lanka team.

A free-flowing batter he opened the innings for Moors SC and Bloomfield Cricket Club and was gentlemanly in his conduct both on and off the field.

After hanging up his bat Asgerally bowed out of the cricket scene and kept a low profile but was never out of the game and followed it whenever he had the time and occasion.

He also served as a member of the Sri Lanka team selection committee.

He was a product of St. Peter’s College.
