The inter-club rugby League reaches a defining moment when defending champions and unbeaten Kandy Sports Club lock horns with CR and FC in what could decide the outcome of the tournament on Sunday at Nittawela.

The loser of the match will then have only an outside chance of winning or retaining the trophy.

With a packed house anticipated and both sides firmly in contention for top spot in the league, the outcome of this clash could also have a decisive bearing on the Super Round Cup segment.

Despite not hitting top gear in recent outings, Kandy SC remain a formidable unit, particularly at home where they enjoy the most passionate and vocal supporter base in the domestic game. Their record for last three decades remains amazing and unlikely another club could match.

Led by skipper, Tharindu Chaturanga, Kandy’s backline continues to possess explosive pace and attacking flair. The three-quarter line featuring Dhanushka Ranjan, Dilkusha Dange, Dinal Ekanayake and Kavindu Perera has consistently threatened defences with speed and sharp handling and not forgetting the role Srinath Sooriyabandara is capable of.

Much attention will also be on Akash Madushanka, who is yet to produce a standout performance since his inclusion in the champion outfit. The match offers him an ideal platform to justify his selection.

Up-front, Kandy’s forwards will look to impose their physical authority with Dilshan Fareed as hooker alongside Thilina Bandara and Dahan Wickremarachchi being the tireless workhorses, setting the tone in tight exchanges.
There is also speculation that Buwanaka Udangamuwa could be reintroduced adding impact and experience after returning to the country last month.

But CR and FC arrive at Nittawela brimming with confidence, having lost just one match to CH and FC.

Under the leadership of Lasindu Karunathilake the Red Shirts have shown impressive organisation, resilience and tactical maturity. Their ability to defend patiently while striking decisively on transition has been a hallmark of their campaign so far.

Key figures for CR include Thenuka Nanayakkara, Naveen Marasinghe, Chamod Muthunayake and Mursheed Doray, all of whom have delivered consistently strong performances.

Nanayakkara, in particular, has been outstanding in directing play while his accuracy from the kicking tee has often proved decisive an area where CR currently hold an edge, with Kandy SC experiencing a lean patch in goal-kicking.

While home advantage and depth give Kandy a slight edge on paper, CR’s structured approach and superior kicking game could tilt the balance if penalties become decisive. With pride, momentum and league supremacy at stake, all signs point to a high-intensity contest worthy of a blockbustre billing.
