The opening day of the Prima Sunrise Junior Open Golf Championship teed off at the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club saw youngster Reshan Algama in sparkling form carding a fine 69 gross score yesterday. Algama was in good form on the greens while Janeesh Weerasinghe and Adithya Weerasinghe were tied on second place with an identical score of 72 each.

The tournament is propped up by Prima Sunrise for the 17th consecutive year.

The Gold Division and Silver Division Girls (15-18 plus) saw India’s Asara Sawhney set the pace with a steady 79, demonstrating excellent control around the course.

Kaitlyn Norton followed in second position with a round of 90 continuing her success at the same course where she won at the Club Championship of the NEGC last weekend as well.

In the Bronze Division Boys (11-12 years), Jaden Sathasivam delivered a superb performance, firing a brilliant 57 to lead the field comfortably.

Yuvan Rathiskanth returned a commendable 61 to secure second place. The Bronze Division Girls (11-12 years) witnessed Mushfira Muzammil topping the leaderboard with a confident 76, while Dulkini Kangara finished closely behind with 79 to claim second place.

The younger golfers also impressed in the Copper Division Boys (10 years and under) as Thisura Premarathana emerged as the leader with 33 while the consistent Abhiman Abeywardhena followed with a close 36 within striking range.

In the Copper division Girls, Sanuthi Sithumli and Dinara Perera shared the top honours after both returned identical scores of 54, showing the promising talent emerging in junior golf.

With two more rounds to be played, the championship promises intense competition as Sri Lanka’s young golfers continue their quest for top honours with more than 70 golfers teeing off.
