The National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOCSL) has decided to hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and elections for the 2025–2029 term on April 25 at 4.30 p.m. Olympic House auditorium.
The decision was taken at a Special General Meeting (SGM) held last Saturday (14) at the Olympic House Auditorium under the leadership of NOCSL President Suresh Subramaniam, with the participation of executive committee members and representatives. The proposal received the approval of the majority of delegates present.
Accordingly, nominations for the new office bearers must be submitted at least 14 days before the election, with April 11 set as the deadline.
A three-member election committee has been appointed to conduct the poll. Retired Supreme Court Judge K.T. Chithrasiri will serve as the chairman, while President’s Counsel Harsha Amarasekara and Attorney-at-Law Piyasena Ranasinghe will serve as the other members of the committee.
Although the NOCSL election for the 2025–2029 term was required to be held before December 27, 2025, it could not be conducted within the stipulated timeframe due to various reasons.
Several local sports association officials had subsequently informed the International Olympic Committee (IOC) about the delay, prompting the IOC to instruct Sri Lanka’s Olympic authorities to hold the election before April 30, 2026.
Meanwhile, the IOC has also directed that two representatives of local sports associations, including the president of the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL), who are currently under investigation for disciplinary matters, should not participate in NOCSL SGM and AGM proceedings.
Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo yesterday, NOCSL President Suresh Subramaniam and Secretary General Fifdy Fahmy said the IOC’s directive will remain in effect until the investigations are concluded, and therefore it will also apply to the April 25 election.
The NOCSL has also decided to inform the Minister of Sports and the IOC about all developments that took place during last Saturday’s SGM.
Meanwhile, the current NOCSL administration has reached a general consensus to nominate veteran shooting sports athlete and administrator Shirantha Peiris as the presidential candidate from their side. Peiris confirmed to the media for the first time that he had accepted the proposal.
