The 24th Inter-Plantation Rugby Sevens concluded in grand style at Dickoya, with Malwatte Plantations successfully defending their title, defeating Maskeliya 31-7 in a thrilling Cup final played before a packed crowd.
Played for the prestigious Bartleet Meyer Trophy, the tournament once again lived up to its reputation as one of the most entertaining rugby events in the hill country, blending fast-paced action with a carnival-like atmosphere. With PEO TV on board as the official broadcast partner, fans across the island were able to witness the excitement unfold.
Malwatte showed their class throughout the tournament, dominating the group stage with convincing wins, including a massive 64-0 victory over Balangoda and a 38-0 win against Hatton. They carried that momentum into the knockout stages, overcoming Kotagala 24-5 in the semi-final before sealing the title in style against Maskeliya.
Maskeliya, who had a strong run to the final with wins over Kelani Valley and Elpitiya, were unable to match Malwatte’s pace and structure in the decider. Despite their efforts, Malwatte’s experience and cohesion proved too strong on the day.
Kelani Valley emerged Bowl champions with a hard-fought 19-14 win over Talawakelle, while Kotagala edged out Elpitiya 17-14 to claim the Plate title. Hatton dominated Balangoda 24-0 to secure the Shield championship.
Over the past 24 years, the Inter-Plantation Sevens has played a vital role in nurturing rugby talent within plantation communities. It has consistently provided a platform for naturally gifted players to showcase their skills, many of whom have gone on to represent clubs and even the national team.
