Isuru Kumara and Hansani Gomes best lifters

International medalists Isuru Kumara (North Western Province) and Hansani Gomes (Western Province) were crowned Best Male and Female Lifters at the 49th National Sports Festival (NSF) Weightlifting Championship, held at the University of Kelaniya Indoor Sports Complex. 

Organized under the guidance of the Ministry of Sports and the Department of Sports Development, the inter-provincial competition drew top lifters from across the island.

Isuru Kumara dominated the 60kg men’s weight class, while Hansani Gomes shone in the 48kg women’s category, both delivering performances that stood out for their power, consistency and international-level execution. Their technical mastery and medal-winning lifts earned them the highest individual honors of the tournament.

The North Western Province ended as the overall champions, claiming eight gold and two silver medals, with equal strength shown by both men and women. The men’s team took home four golds and two silvers, while the women’s team secured four golds, showcasing the Province’s exceptional depth in the sport.

Western Province claimed the overall runner-up title, collecting four golds and three bronze medals, led by standout athletes like Hansani Gomes. Meanwhile, North Central Province finished third, earning three golds, five silvers and four bronzes, demonstrating strong competition throughout the event.

This year’s weightlifting championship not only highlighted fierce provincial rivalry but also reflected the growing standards of Sri Lankan lifters on the national stage.
