Defending inter club League rugby champions Kandy SC and CR and FC will battle it out on Saturday for the top slot in the 2025-26 championship at Longden Place in Colombo.

Kandy SC move into the match with 51 points and need only a draw to become the League table toppers as they have done many times in past seasons that have made them the undisputed champions of rugby in the country.

On the other hand CR and FC move into the match with 48 points and need to beat Kandy SC to become table toppers that made them champions in 2023.

It will be interesting to see if Kandy SC do a U-turn and agree to play in what is being touted as a play-off match so the team that wins the match will be declared as champions according to a new playing condition implemented by the newly elected administration of the sport in the country Sri Lanka Rugby.

Kandy SC before the start of the League declared in no uncertain terms officially that they will not play in a play-off even if they end up second in the final points table.

If the so-called play-off match takes place it will be unprecedented in the annals of rugby in the country where two teams (Kandy SC and CR and FC) may have to play each other three times to decide who the champion team is in total contrast to how the inter club League was played for more than 30 years with Kandy SC dominating.
