Sri Lanka will field one of its most promising junior golf teams at the Asian Youth Games (AYG) in Bahrain scheduled to begin on October 23.
The event is a continental multi-sport spectacle that has become a proving ground for Asia’s next generation of elite athletes. The Sri Lankans are scheduled to leave the country on October 20.
The AYG, held every four years by the Olympic Council of Asia, gives young golfers a rare chance to compete at a level that mirrors the Asian Games and Youth Olympic Games.
The Sri Lankan team will have Reshan Algama, the nation’s highest-ranked junior golfer who is in the top 500 of the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR).
Algama has blazed a trail for local golf with discipline and talent taking junior golf to a different level.
Jevahn Sathasivam another junior sensation hard hitting golfer will be another player who will make it to Bahrain. These two players will be joined by another boy from Anuradapura, Adhithya Weerasinghe now studying at Ananda College who made his mark through the HSBC Junior Golf program.
Alongside these three lads Kaya Daluwatte, Sri Lanka’s only female world-ranked golfer and a rising symbol of strength in women’s golf. Will also make it. At just 17, Daluwatte has already claimed the Sri Lanka Amateur Women’s Championship for the second straight year. Kaya studies in India and has been competing in top international events while staying on track academically.
Guiding this young squad will be Mithun Perera, one of Sri Lanka’s most respected and seasoned professionals. His experience competing internationally and mentoring juniors will be invaluable as the team faces Asia’s best.
