Views alongside the Pekoe Trail
The Pekoe Trail is one of Sri Lanka’s newest long-distance hiking routes and already one of its most compelling. Spanning more than 300 kilometres across 22 curated stages, the trail passes through tea plantations, cloud forests, waterfalls, and working villages. Designed to support sustainable tourism with backing from the European Union and USAID, it offers both adventure and cultural immersion.
Among those who have taken on sections of the trail is Arj Samarakoon, an investor and reform advocate who believes the journey teaches lessons far beyond hiking. His reflections combine practical advice with life lessons that make the Pekoe Trail more than just a walk through nature.
Preparing for the Trail
Choose the right season
The driest windows are from January to March and June to September. Expect heavier rain and more leeches in May and October.

Download the Pekoe Trail app for stage maps, offline navigation, and transport details. Buy a trail pass online to support maintenance and signage.
Pack light, pack smart

According to Samarakoon: “Preparation is what frees your mind to enjoy the trail. The lighter your load, the more energy you have to take in the journey.”
On the Trail
Walk at your own rhythm
The trail runs at altitudes between 1,200 and 2,000 metres, and the climbs can be steep. Steady pacing matters more than speed.
Learn from the locals
With more than 200,000 people living in communities along the route, hikers are never far from tea workers or villagers. Samarakoon recalls: “Sharing tea with villagers was just as memorable as the views from the ridges.”

Embrace the unexpected
Rain showers, muddy paths, and sore muscles are part of the journey. Samarakoon reflects: “The discomforts weren’t setbacks. They were reminders that growth usually comes with a bit of struggle.”
Connecting Steps with Purpose
For Samarakoon, the Pekoe Trail became more than a personal challenge. It linked naturally to the 500k Steps Campaign which is raising money and awareness to improve the heritage trail.
Practical Highlights
Best stages to start with:
• Hanthana to Galaha: A gentle introduction beginning near Kandy.
• Norwood to Bogawantalawa: Sweeping plantation views in the Golden Valley of Tea.
• Ella to Demodara: Short but iconic, passing the Nine Arches Bridge and railway loop.
The Pekoe Trail is a journey of discovery that combines Sri Lanka’s natural beauty with its living culture. For Arj Samarakoon, it was also a reminder that lessons in patience, resilience, and humility are found far beyond the boardroom.
Travelers who walk the trail return not just with memories but with insights that last. And by connecting their hike to initiatives like the 500K Steps campaign 500k Steps Campaign they can ensure every step contributes to something greater than themselves.
