Mohan Munasinghe co-winner of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize (Vice Chair, IPCC), and the 2021 Blue Planet Prize Laureate, met Governor Phil Murphy of New Jersey on 24 September 2025, at a high level US-India business summit in Mumbai. They had cordial discussions on leveraging business and trade between the USA and South Asia, to promote global sustainability and peace. Gov. Murphy is a leading democratic contender for the 2028 US Presidential election.
In a special session for top business leaders, Prof. Munasinghe explained how business, civil society and government forms the sustainability implementing triangle, that must work together to achieve the 17 SDG. He stressed that “Business is part of the solution, and not necessarily the problem. Ethical managers are the key to business sustainability, while methods like value-chain, life cycle analysis can help firms achieve win-win outcomes that reduce both costs and natural resource use. Digital technology will facilitate both sustainable production and consumption”. He pointed out that cities like Mumbai and Newark could launch a digital technology-led, smart sustainability transformation that improved both infrastructure and governance.
