Sri Lankan design studio Pendi marks a decade of creativity, experimentation and collaboration with the launch of Pendi 10, a very special limited edition collection created to celebrate ten years of making.
Founded by Natalie Pendigrast and Dilanke Hettiarachchi, Pendi began as a small, self-initiated exploration into lighting design. The brand grew organically shaped by curiosity, instinct and a willingness to figure things out along the way. What started with a handful of pieces has, over the past decade, evolved into a design studio spanning lighting, furniture and homeware.
From the beginning, Pendi’s approach has resisted polish in favour of process. It embraces the irregular, the handmade and the unexpected by allowing materials to behave as they naturally do and giving artisans the space to interpret, adapt and leave their mark. This openness has become a defining characteristic of the brand’s visual language which is pieces that feel alive, slightly imperfect and deeply human.
Central to Pendi’s journey has been its close collaboration with local craftspeople across Sri Lanka. Whether working with cane weavers, ceramicists or woodworkers, the team consistently prioritised skill, patience and knowledge passed down through generations. These relationships are not transactional they are built over time through trust, mutual respect and a shared commitment to making things well.
At the same time, Pendi has always maintained a sense of play. Many of its collections draw from memory, everyday rituals and a sense of nostalgia reinterpreted through a contemporary lens. There is a lightness in the work, even when the craftsmanship is complex; a reminder that design can be both thoughtful and joyful.
The Pendi 10 collection brings all of these ideas together. Conceived as a series of collector’s pieces, each design reflects a moment in the brand’s evolution which is an exploration of material, form and technique that has defined its journey. Produced in very limited numbers, these pieces are not intended for reproduction. Once sold, they become part of the homes and stories of those who collect them.
More than a milestone, the collection is a tribute to the many hands behind Pendi. Every woven surface, every glazed finish, every structural detail carries the presence of the maker. In a time where speed, mass reproduction and scale often dominate, Pendi 10 chooses to honour slowness, intention and the value of making something that lasts.
“Pendi has always been a little bit of experimentation and a deep love for the people who make things. This collection celebrates our journey of trying and the many hands that have been part of it.”
— Natalie Pendigrast
Ten years on, Pendi remains rooted in the same ideas it began with curiosity, collaboration and intention. Pendi 10 is both a reflection of that journey and a continuation of it, looking ahead while staying grounded in the values that have shaped the brand from the very beginning.
