In terms of oral health, most people only focus on their teeth. However, the true foundation of a healthy mouth lies in the gums. If one’s gums are not strong and healthy, teeth cannot remain stable or function correctly. In Sri Lanka, gum disease continues to be widespread despite the availability of modern dental care. This is largely due to the fact that it is often overlooked, which is why doing it right from the start is of great importance.
Healthy gums are essentially a protective barrier that shield the roots of teeth and the supporting bone from harmful bacteria. When neglected, plaque buildup leads inflammation. At its early stages, gum disease is fully reversible, however, if it is ignored, it could result in periodontitis which leads to gum recession, tooth loosening, bone damage and even tooth loss. It is for this reason that early action makes a significant difference.
Furthermore, gum health is closely linked to a person’s overall wellbeing. Research has shown strong connections between gum disease, diabetes, and heart disease. Healthy gums can support better blood sugar control, while uncontrolled diabetes can worsen gum inflammation. Persistent inflammation has also been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. This is why protecting your gums from the start is key to safeguarding general health.
Lifestyle choices are of paramount importance. For example, smoking can mask early warning signs such as bleeding, which allows disease to progress unnoticed. Stress can also weak the immune system, which reduces the body’s ability to fight infection. Poor dietary habits can also encourage plaque buildup and deprive gums of essential nutrients. Making healthier choices early on can strengthen long term protection.
There are certain common misconceptions, such as the fact that people assume that if their gums do not bleed, that they are healthy. The reality, however, is that avoiding brushing along the gum line may prevent bleeding, while plaque continuous to accumulate. Proper brushing must include both teeth and the gum line, twice a day for two minutes.
Regular visits to the Dentist are equally important. A simple examination every six months provides opportunities for early detection and timely care. Prevention is always easier, less invasive and more cost effective than treatment at advanced stages.
Gum disease is largely preventable. By maintaining good oral hygiene, attending regular check-ups, and making mindful lifestyle choices, we can protect our gums and overall health for years to come. When we do it right from the start, healthy smiles can truly last a lifetime.
