A joke that went sour!

A special meeting of the Pohottuwa Diyawanna group was held the other day with Number Two in the chair to enable the members to air their grievances.

Diyawanna members of the other constituent parties of the ruling coalition had not been invited to it.

Several members including some purohitas took advantage of this opportunity to come out with the injustices and wrongs they had had to suffer. A fair member from the South also referred to some injustices she had to suffer during the last regime and went on to remonstrate that the current government too had denied her due by failing to offer her a purohita office even at the state level. However, she was not prepared to kowtow to anyone, she added.

As she was continuing with her tale of woes, a certain purohita from the upcountry known for his unorthodox conduct, suddenly interrupted her cracking a joke punning on a word she had used. And that got the fair member’s goat and she lashed out at the purohita in choice Sinhala and English.

As the fair member turned to the purohita who teased her to continue with the tongue-lashing, the latter quickly walked out of the meeting. As the purohita was making the quick exit, she shouted at him: “Why are you running away…Come and face it!”
