The United National Party (UNP) and Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) have reached an agreement to work together and administer local bodies where the opposition holds a majority, in collaboration with other opposition parties.
The two parties have agreed to work with other opposition groups, according to a joint statement signed by SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara and UNP General Secretary Thalatha Athukorala, issued yesterday.
Ms. Athukorala, along with UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene, Chairman Wajira Abeywardena, and National Organiser Sagala Ratnayake, met with an SJB delegation led by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, Mr. Madduma Bandara, MP Mujibur Rahman, and former MP Lakshman Kiriella yesterday.
During the meeting, they agreed to cooperate and engage with other opposition parties to form administrations in local bodies. Some independent groups are also expected to collaborate with the SJB and UNP in several councils, including the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC).
Independent Group 5, backed by MP Ravi Karunanayake, is likely to support the UNP and SJB in forming an administration in the CMC. “All opposition parties should work together for the betterment of the nation,” Mr. Karunanayake told the media.
Meanwhile, MP Premnath Dolawatte told the media that even the SLPP might join forces with other parties. “Many have got it wrong with regard to what the SLPP leadership has mentioned during the past few days. What the SLPP leaders ruled out was forming a joint opposition alliance. However, they have been positive in forming joint administrations in local bodies. Forming a joint opposition alliance is one thing, while forming joint administrations in local bodies is another matter,” Mr. Dolawatte said.
It was also noted that the NPP is attempting to persuade some opposition members elected to local bodies.
