Students of the Rajarata University staged a protest in front of the Anuradhapura main bus stand demanding the government withdraw the proposed Kotalawala Private University Bill. The protest organised by the Inter University Student Federation lasted for about an hour.

Representative of the Student Federation Lahiru Weerawardene said every successive government since independence failed to implement a system of education to meet the requirements of the country with a reputation for high standard of literacy when compared to other countries in the region. He pointed out that more than 2000 schools in the country had been closed and several others were facing the threat of closure.

“Children are being distanced from education and the university education is in danger due to privatisation. Parents will have to spend more than Rs. 10 million for university education upto degree level if the government was allowed to pass the proposed bill” He further said.

He requested the public to compel the government to not ruin the free education system in the country.
