Only around 45,000 out of the 177,588 students who qualified for university admission based on 2024 Advanced Level (A/L) results will secure seats in state universities, the University Grants Commission (UGC) said.

UGC Secretary Dr. Priyantha Premakumara stated that while 177,588 students met the basic eligibility criteria, only 40,000 to 45,000 can be accommodated under the free education system due to limited capacity.

As a result, 132,588 students will be denied state university admission. These students will have to seek higher education opportunities in private institutions or government-affiliated higher education institutes.
