The National People’s Power (NPP) government came to power by telling endless lies, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa said.
Addressing the May Day rally at the Ananda Samarakoon Open Theatre in Nugegoda yesterday, MP Rajapaksa said the current government is maintaining excessive tax policies that people can no longer bear.
“The current government blames us, saying the Rajapaksa government reduced taxes. But we never imposed unfair taxes on people when they were facing tough times. We always tried to provide relief to the people. Yes, we made some decisions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic situation in the country, but most of those decisions were made for the benefit of the innocent people,” he said.
“I’m looking forward to clearing former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s name under the NPP government. We did nothing wrong to the people. We always stood with them and made decisions to uplift their lives.
He said the SLPP has now become a new party, and as it grows stronger, the government has become afraid of it. “You can try anything to defeat the SLPP, but remember the SLPP belongs to the people who once stood with former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.”
“We are not interested in the personal problems of the MPs in the NPP government. What matters is that people expected this government to keep its promises. They wanted reduced electricity bills, lower fuel prices, and affordable rice. But the NPP government has failed to deliver, and now the people have started rejecting them,” he said.
MP Rajapaksa also called on candidates and leaders who left the SLPP to rejoin and work together to make the country one of the fastest-developing nations in the world once again.
