A system where local government bodies could get involved with the police and security forces will be an effective move to maintain law and order, Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa said over the weekend.

“Sri Lanka needs a system where law and order could be maintained through local bodies together with the police and the security forces, Premadasa said during a “Jana Hamuwa” in Mathugama. Premadasa also proposed setting up of civil defence committees and community defence committees at village level. “The public could also play a role in preventing the emergence of underworld gangs though these measures,” he said.

“People in this country have become hostages of murderers. Killings takes place on the streets, workplaces and in court premises. The government has no proper plan to deal with crime. It needs tuition on how to maintain law and order,” he added. “Sri Lankan society seemed to be controlled by unidentified gunmen. Killer squads and criminals are controlling the Sri Lankan society today. Bullets, bombs, swords and T56 seemed to be dominating today,” he also said. Furthermore he said the government won the last two elections just by deceiving people through false promises and once again is trying to win the local government election by deceiving people.

Also he said the claim made by the government that Sri Lanka and USA would come up with a joint statement on para tariff is false. “ The Government will not be able to deceive people on para tariff for long ,” he said.
