Heavy rainfall from early hours of last morning has been experienced in the eastern slopes of the Central hills. This has resulted in earth slips bringing traffic on the Nuwara Eliya – Udapussellawa main highway to a standstill..

A senior official of the District Disaster Management Centre said school children of the area attending schools in Nuwara Eliya had either stayed back at home, or returned home for want of transport.

The Engineers in Charge said the water level in Castlereagh reservoir was reaching fast the spill over level due to the heavy rain experienced in the western slopes.

Meanwhile, vegetable cultivations in the Kandapola area have entirely been destroyed by floods caused by heavy rain much to the anxiety of the vegetable farmers.

Farmers said the vegetable farms had been submerged by floods caused by the overflow of the canals leading to Bomburuella river.
Police said the Nuwara Eliya - Ragala main highway was under water obstructing traffic.
