Former Chief Minister of North Central Province S. M. Ranjith, currently serving a 16-year rigorous imprisonment at Welikada Prison, has been assigned to work in the prison’s printing division, according to Prisons Spokesman Gamini B. Disanayake. The former Chief Minister, convicted on corruption charges, is among several inmates deployed in the printing section, which handles tasks such as bookbinding and file preparation. However, Disanayake noted that Ranjith’s assignment may be revoked if his pending appeal against the sentence is accepted by the higher courts. The printing division at Welikada primarily employs foreign inmates, providing them with vocational opportunities during incarceration. The section currently holds nearly 100 inmates across various work assignments as part of its rehabilitation programme.
