Demanding ransom over Whatsapp

Several other businessmen are facing this threat, but they have not made formal complaints in fear of any possible danger to their life

The Meegoda police have received several complaints regarding demands made for ransom under death threat through Whatsapp messages in the names of underworld gangsters living overseas.   

A senior police official in Nugegoda Division said a ransom of Rs. 01 million had been demanded from a businessman in Meegoda Economic Centre through Whatsapp using the name of an underworld gangster. He said the businessman had been given a bank account number to credit money. The official said in a similar incident a businessman dealing in building materials in Meegoda had received a call demanding a ransom of Rs.20 million. He said several other businessmen are facing this threat, but they have not made formal complaints in fear of any possible danger to their life.   

He said the police have initiated investigations to nab the suspects involved in the racket.
