The Department of Meteorology yesterday cautioned the public on the current climatic conditions advised the people to avoid extensive work in the open air such as in paddy fields for long hours.
“One must not stay in the sun for long hours. Those who work in paddy fields and others who are engaged in agriculture related work should be cautious of the prevailing heat conditions. Also children should not be kept in playgrounds for long hours when it comes to their sports activities.
“ Those who work under the sun should also drink sufficient amount of water “ Department of Meteorology Director General Athula Karunanayake told media.
Mr. Karunanayake said people feel the heat because of radiation which comes from the sun these days.  Also he said the radiation will heat up water in the reservoirs.    Whilst highlighting that heavy showers will not be experienced until end of May , he said plans have to be drawn up to ensure that there is sufficient water for agriculture and for the generation of hydro power.
Some occasional showers were expected during evening in Central , Sabaragamuwa and North Western provinces during the coming days .
