While expressing its condolences the Amarapura Maha Sangha Sabha on the destruction caused to Myanmar, the General Secretary of the sect most venerable Balapitiye Siriseewali Thera in a letter addressed to the President of Myanmar Min Aung Hlaing and Most Venerable Bhaddanta Chandimabhivamsa Mahanayake Thera , expressed solidarity with the people of Myanmar and stated the Sangha Sabha is committed to extending assistance to those affected, further strengthening the historic relationship between our two nations.
Following is the full text of the letter
With profound sadness ( sanvega) , the Sri Lankan Amarapura Maha Sangha Sabha extends its deepest condolences to the people of Myanmar who have suffered immense losses due to the devastating earthquake. Our thoughts and blessings are with the bereaved families, the injured, and all those affected by this tragic disaster.
Sri Lanka and Myanmar share a historic and unbreakable bond rooted in Buddhist heritage and centuries old tie s. In the 15th Century, Burmese monks travelled to Sri Lanka to receive higher ordination under the guidance of Sri Lankan Maha Theras during the Kotte era. More than 223 years ago, Sri Lankan monks journeyed to Myanmar, received higher ordination in Amarapura, Mandakay, and subsequently established our Amarapura monastic tradition in Sri Lanka which continues to flourish to this day.  At this moment of sorrow, we have meditated upon this disaster in deep Vipassana , reflecting on impermanence ( Anicaa) of all conditioned phenomena. We have dedicated merits for the wellbeing of all those affected in Myanmar. From the media, we became aware of the destruction of temples in Myanmar. This is a practical example of the impermanence of the world.
This sacred connection between our nations has fostered mutual spiritual enrichment, reinforcing the shared values of compassion, wisdom, and solidarity. During this difficult time, we stand in unwavering support of all the victims in Myanmar. We encourage all to seek solace in the timeless teachings of the Dhamma, drawing strength from the profound wisdom of the Buddha to navigate this sorrowful moment.
The Sri Lanka Amarapura Maha Sanga Sabha is committed to extending assistance to those affected, further strengthening the historic relationship between our two nations.
On behalf of the Most Venerable Karagoda Uyangoda Maithri Murthi Mahanayake Thera , Supreme Patriarch of the Sri Lanka Amarapura Sect and all the other officials and devotees of the Amarapura Maha Sangha Sabha , we express our heartfelt prayers. May those who have departed attain supreme bliss of Nibbana . May the affected communities find strength, resilience and peace.
