The World Robot Olympiad Sri Lanka 2025 National Selections brought together 28 teams of young innovators in Colombo, showcasing creative solutions to real-world challenges. With strong backing from educators, officials, and industry leaders, the event highlighted the nation’s growing focus on robotics and STEM education ahead of the international final in Singapore.
The World Robot Olympiad (WRO) Sri Lanka 2025 National Selections concluded on Saturday at Burhani Serendib School Hall in Colombo 04, drawing close to 250+ spectators and featuring 28 teams of young innovators from across the country. The event highlighted the immense creativity and technical skills of Sri Lankan students who competed in the Elementary, Junior, and Senior divisions.
The opening was graced by distinguished guests including Hon. Mr. Hanif Yusuf, Governor of the Western Province, and Mr. Waruna Dhanapala, Secretary to the Ministry of Digital Economy, alongside principals and representatives from schools and institutions across Sri Lanka. Their presence underscored the growing importance of robotics and STEM education in preparing the next generation for a technology-driven future.
Students representing Burhani Serendib School (Colombo), Lyceum Academy Pvt Ltd (Colombo), Meu Labs Pvt Ltd (students from Elizabeth Moir, Royal College, J.M.C College International Maharagama, Colombo/Hindu College, Royal College Colombo 7, The British School of Colombo), Gateway Dehiwala (Western Province), Gateway Kandy (Central Province), and St. Thomas’s Catholic International College, Seeduwa (Western Province) presented innovative solutions to real-world challenges.
Judges and guests engaged closely with participants, praising their problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and creativity.
At the heart of the competition were projects that blended technical skill with social impact.
RoboMind from Royal College, the overall champions, impressed with their app-controlled automated dustbin that alerts users when full.
Smart Steps from Burhani Serendib School, the overall runners-up, created a smart walking stick for visually impaired individuals, complete with vibration feedback, GPS tracking, and an emergency SOS button.
Both teams earned the honor of representing Sri Lanka at the WRO International Final in Singapore in November 2025, where they will compete on a global stage under this year’s theme, Future of Robotics.
While RoboMind secured first place, the two teams selected to represent Sri Lanka at the WRO International Final in Singapore this November are Smart Steps and Project R.E.A.C.H (Junior Division) – both from Burhani Serendib School. Other notable winners included TrackShield from Burhani Serendib School in the Elementary Division, Project R.E.A.C.H from Burhani Serendib School in the Junior Division, and Spec Z from Burhani Serendib School in the Senior Division.
Special awards were presented for innovation, technical excellence, and startup potential, recognizing standout achievements across age groups.
The judging panel, comprising Dr. Nushara Wedasingha of SLIIT, Migara Amithodhana of Magicbit, and Huzefa Akbarally of Akbar Brothers Pvt. Ltd., commended the high standard of robotics and innovation on display.
They noted that the competition reflects the growing capabilities of Sri Lankan youth to use technology as a tool for solving pressing challenges.
The event was made possible with the support of Meu Labs Pvt Ltd as Technical Partner, Haycarb Pvt Ltd and Adamjee Lukmanjee and Sons Pvt Ltd as Platinum Sponsors, and Metropolitan, Avalon, and Murtaza Ali Abidhussen Esufally as Gold Sponsors.
Sponsors emphasized that supporting such initiatives is an investment in the nation’s future, cultivating creativity, innovation, and problem-solving among young people.
The WRO Sri Lanka 2025 National Selections left students, parents, and educators inspired. Many described the competition as more than just a robotics contest -it was a platform for young minds to explore new ideas, collaborate, and gain the confidence to take their innovations to the world.
With Sri Lanka now preparing to send its top teams to Singapore, the event marked an important step in placing the country on the global map of robotics and STEM education.
