“Ape Gedara Gini Thiyaida”  (Will They Burn Our House Down), a contemporary Sinhala stage play by acclaimed playwright Rajitha Dissanayake, will return to the Lionel Wendt Theatre on 8 January at 7.00 pm, following a successful maiden run that played to full houses and drew strong critical acclaim.
Dissanayake is regarded as one of Sri Lanka’s foremost playwrights of the past three decades. His body of work includes award-winning and widely discussed productions likeWeeraya Merila, Sihina Horu Aran, Apahu Herenna Be, Bakamoona Veedi Basi, Nethuwa Beri Minihek and 2019 Jooli Mase Dawasak. His writing consistently engages with urgent socio-political questions while remaining grounded in sharp characterisation and compelling dramatic situations.
Ape Gedara Gini Thiyaida centres on a group of women reuniting after many years at the home of one of their friends. Beneath the surface lie unspoken tensions, secrets, and moral conflicts. An unexpected incident sets off a chain of events that spiral out of control. As private conflicts spill into the public sphere, the play examines how reputations, relationships, and even physical spaces can be placed at risk. Through this intense night, the drama explores fear, loyalty, hypocrisy, gender politics, and the fragile boundaries between the personal and the political.
The cast comprises Jayani Senanayake, Bimsara Premaratne, Ama Wijesekara, Yashodha Rasaduni, Prasad Sooriyaratchi, Pradeep Aragama, and Tharusha Kumarasinghe. Music is composed by Mahira Dissanayake; set design by Anuradha Mallawarachchi; lighting by Ranga Samarakoon; makeup by PriyanthaDissanayake; costumes by Ama Wijesekara and Sureni Lenora; with stage management by Sureni Lenora and team.
