Due to many reasons, known and unknown, some of Sri Lanka’s cinematic gems  remained  buried without getting noticed by the world. However,  after several decades, the world-renowned French cinema has chosen to pay a tribute to some of these near-forgotten classics with a full retrospective featuring leading filmmakers,  some of whom have passed away.

The world renowned 47th Three Continents Festival at Nantes,  in France,  is showcasing a collection of Sri Lankan films  held from November 22 to 29.

Titled “On the Roads of the Golden Age of Sri Lankan Cinema, ” the retrospective  explores a fine blend of Sri Lankan cinema starting from the country’s pioneer filmmaker Dr. Lester James Peries who  changed the course of Sri Lankan cinema with his debut “Rekava” or “Line of Destiny”, followed by  Dr. Dharmasena Pathiraja who launched the ‘second revolution’ of the country’s cinema,  and initiated a rebellious journey which continues to the present day with filmmakers such  Prasanna Vithanage.

The retrospective giving much needed international attention to lesser known but exciting filmmakers of Sri Lankan filmmakers is supported by the French Embassy in Sri Lanka.

It is also the result of a collaboration with the National Film Corporation (NFC),  and the Sri Lanka National Archives (SLNA), as an extension of the France-India-Sri Lanka Cine Heritage (FISCH) project, coinciding with the restoration of Sumitra Peries’ masterpiece The Girls (1978), by the Film Heritage Foundation.
