‘Thaththa’- ‘A Father’ ; A Film On Paternal Love

“Thaththa” or “A Father”, a movie on the depth of paternal love, directed by young filmmaker Prasad Samarathunga is now being screened in theatres around Sri Lanka.
This emotional tale about the relationship between a father and son is produced by Rushantha Wijenayaka and it stars Kumara Thirimadura, Nilmini Thennakone, Sathsilu Wijenayaka, Oneli Himahansi, Kusheya Anagi, Kumara Waduressa, Rushantha Wijenayaka, Sanath Rathnayake, Simethi Akila, Upul Weerasinghe, Sannet Dikkumbura and Upul Nishantha. 


Revolving around a 10-year-old boy who is regularly punished by his father and decides to gain revenge on him (father), ‘Thaththa’ narrates about the deep love a father could have towards his children.
Ten-year old Ruwan lives with his mother and father Ratnapala who is a daily wage earning labourer. Ratnapala punishes his son regularly which turns out to be a mental torture for young Ruwan who develops hatred towards his father. 


One day, Kalu Mudalali, a rich man in the area assigns Ratnapala to clean one of his stores. Mudalali opens the door of the store for Ratnapala to clean and Ruwan who awaits a chance to get rid of his father locks him inside and runs back home. He keeps this as a secret but throughout the day it disturbs him as sometimes he feels the need of his father. Finally, he confesses to his mother and both run to rescue Ratnapala. Would they be too late, and by then what would have happened to Ratnapala Thaththa?

Prasad Samarathunga
