S.Thomas’ College Prize Giving: Thomian Warden Perera warns students of growing AI threat!

Warden of S.Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia Asanka Perera underscored the growing threats posed by artificial intelligence (AI) and emphasised on the urgent need for the schoolboys of the school by the sea to keep up with rapidly developing technology.

He made these comments at the annual prize giving ceremony of the school held for the year 2025 on February 20, 2026. 

Warden Perera stressed that every future Thomian must be equipped with not only technical knowledge, but also with integrity and critical thinking skills necessary to navigate the challenges of AI responsibly.

The annual Prize Giving of S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia for the year 2025 was held at the school’s main hall. The Chief Guests at the function were Nanda Fernando, an old boy of the College and his wife Mrs. Deshani Fernando.

The evening started off with the traditional lighting of the oil lamp followed by an opening prayer by the chaplain, Ven. Sam Ponniah.

S.Thomas’ College Warden Asanka Perera initiated the proceedings with a speech, highlighted the significant events that have taken place in the ongoing 175 anniversary year of the school; mainly the Anniversary service that took place at the ‘Old Cathedral’ in Mutwal, where the institute was first founded before moving into Mount Lavinia.

The Warden went on to celebrate the notable achievements by students in academics during the year under review. 

He then went on to congratulate the Thomian’s who produced amazing results at the GCE O/L and GCE A/L and IAL Examinations.

He didn’t forget to thank the teachers, support staff and everyone else who had helped him make this year a successful year. 

Nanda Fernando stressed on the importance of leadership qualities, the sense of brotherhood and the integrity that school gifts every student with. He spoke of acquiring these qualities as well and not just education because they are needed to mold and guide students.

The Warden handed over the Victoria Gold Medal for the Best All-Round Student of the School to the Head Prefect of the school, Kieran Lawrence.

S.Thomas’ College Sub Warden Sub-Warden Dr. Radeeka Mendis proposed the vote of thanks which was followed by the usual, entertaining speech of Head Prefect, Lawrence, which brought laughter to those present. 

The Western Band, Hewisi band and Oriental Dancers performed on the day.
