Fr. Michael Rodrigo

By Fr. Modestus Fernando

Rev. Fr. Michael Paul Rodrigo, Missionary Oblate of Mary Immaculate, stands as one of the most luminous figures in the story of the Church in Sri Lanka. His life was a song of love — love for God, for the poor, and for this land. He lived and died among the people of Waguruwela, Buttala, where his vision of education, justice, and faith found deep roots in the soil of ordinary lives.
Born with a keen intellect and a gentle heart, Fr. Michael Paul could have chosen an easier path. Yet he heard a deeper call — to live close to the people who struggled for daily bread and dignity. His priesthood was not confined to the church sanctuary; it flowed into the fields, huts, and schools of the poor. He believed that true worship of God must blossom into service for humanity.
Vision at Waguruwela
His vision at Waguruwela When Fr. Michael Paul first arrived was typical of him; he saw not just poverty but potential — the God given capacity of every man, woman, and child to grow, learn, and live fully. He dreamt of a community awakened by education and faith. For him, evangelisation meant helping people to discover their worth and to build a just and humane society.
 Education:  Heart of His Mission
Education was at the centre of his mission. He started pre-schools for the smallest children, where learning was joyful and rooted in love. He encouraged the youth to think critically, to dream beyond limitations, and to take pride in their culture and land. He formed farmer groups, helping peasants to share knowledge, improve their cultivation, and stand together in solidarity.
To Fr. Michael Paul, education was not merely about books; it was about awakening minds and hearts. It was about freeing people from fear and dependence. He often said that true education teaches a person to ask why, to seek truth, and to act with conscience.
A Witness of the Gospel
His simple life among the villagers made the Gospel visible. He prayed with them, worked beside them, and shared their struggles. His home was open to all — a place of welcome, dialogue, and hope. In a time of social tension and violence, he stood firmly for peace and justice, believing that love is stronger than fear.
On November 10, 1987, Fr. Michael Paul laid down his life at the altar of the Eucharist in Waguruwela. His blood became the seed of faith and courage for generations to come. He is remembered not as a victim, but as a faithful witness — a man who lived what he believed. His Legacy Today, the pre-schools, study centers, and farmer communities that he began continue to echo his spirit.
His life reminds us that true Christian mission means walking with people, listening to them, and empowering them to stand tall as children of God. Conclusion Fr. Michael Paul Rodrigo’s life is a gentle challenge to us all — to make faith real through action, to build communities of learning and love, and to keep hope alive even in times of struggle. He showed us that the Gospel is not an idea but a way of living: to love, to serve, and to give without counting the cost.
