It was around two years ago that she was looking for an alternative way to teach English to her own daughter. It was then that she came to know about using phonic sounds to teach.

Without restricting herself to teaching her own daughter, Nadeeka also shared this method with other children around the country which she did by publishing her books.

In collaboration with the M. D. Gunasena, one of the oldest and leading publishers in the country, Nadeeka printed her first book. The rest was history!

“The only way for Sri Lanka to move forward and compete globally is through English language proficiency and Nadee is leading the change,” Rajiv Gunasena, Managing Director of M.D. Gunasena said at the launch of the collection of books.

“When I was launching my first book on phonics, I never thought that in a time span of little as more than one and half years I would be able to launch so many books,” said Nadeeka who has published 16 books within that period of time.

“I started writing books for kids because I believe storybooks play a crucial role in helping children improve their habits and develop essential life skills. Reading storybooks enhances children’s vocabulary, creativity and imagination. It also contributes to their overall brain development, helping them become more thoughtful and imaginative,” Nadeeka said describing the reason behind her writing story books for children.

Nadeeka made it a point to write storybooks in both Sinhala and English, so that the parents who are not too familiar with the English language too can help their children to understand the stories.

“This dual-language approach allows parents to teach their children effectively while also improving their own English skills. It’s one book with two languages, making learning more approachable for both kids and their parents,” she explained.

Among the eight books she has written are ‘Drako’, a story about a dragon and the young boy named Ron which is based on the theme of friendship, and the importance of controlling emotions. Through her next story book titled ‘Three Little Bees’(Mee Masi Yaluwo)  Nadeeka underscores the importance of helping each other, making the right decisions, and working as a team.

Nadeeka has also released a book on ‘Nursery Rhymes’ with 10 famous rhymes such as ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,’ ‘,‘Humpty Dumpty, etc.

The books help parents also teach their children. Nadeeka is planning to provide audio tracks in both Sinhala and English, along with a book for those who purchase it.

The other books that are added to the collection of eight books comprise five colouring books designed by the writer. They include Doodle, Pattern, and books with other colouring activities that help children to develop their interests, skills and other cognitive faculties.

“One of the key advantages of doodle colouring and pattern colouring for kids is that it can significantly enhance memory and focus. Children who engage in these activities tend to develop stronger concentration skills, often being able to sit still and complete their work with dedication. This is one of the main reasons why I designed these books—to encourage better focus and cognitive development through creative coloring,” Nadeeka said at the launch.

The collection of books are now available at all M. D. Gunasena books shops around the country.
