The third edition of Francophonie film festival will be held on March 27 and 28 at the Alliance Française of Colombo (11, Barnes Place, Colombo 7).
The festival will open on Friday, March 27 at 6:00 pm with the Canadian feature film Falcon Lake (rated 16+), a coming-of-age drama set during a summer by a lakeside, exploring adolescence, first emotions and the subtle boundary between reality and imagination. On Saturday, March 28, a series of short films will be shown from 2:30pm onwards, so that a very young audience as well can discover the poetry and creativity of French-language animation. The afternoon will then proceed with the screening, at 3:30 pm, of the French feature film Divertimento.
The film festival is organised by the Embassy of France in Sri Lanka and the Maldives, in partnership with the High commission of Canada in Sri Lanka and Maldives, the Embassy of Romania in Sri Lanka, the Embassy of Switzerland in Sri Lanka and Maldives, will present 3 feature films and 4 short films with English subtitles. This selection of films will allow all audiences, Francophones and non- Francophones, to discover on the big screen movies of different genres and from various countries, including 2 rated for audiences aged 16 and above. Sri Lankan movie lovers will enjoy the best that French-language cinema has to offer.
Organised in connection with the International Day of La Francophonie, celebrated each year on March 20, this event highlights the diversity and vitality of French-language cultures.
Through cinema, it brings together countries that share the French language and promotes dialogue, creativity and cultural exchange. Spoken by more than 396 million people worldwide, French is a global language of expression and cooperation. In Sri Lanka, it continues to attract a growing number of learners and enthusiasts, reflecting strong and enduring cultural ties with the Francophone world.
Through this initiative, the Embassy of France and its partners reaffirm their commitment to promoting cultural diversity and invite audiences in Sri Lanka to discover the richness and plurality of voices that shape Francophone cinema today.
