Dr Wijeyeratne recognised at global cardiology congress

Global recognition for cutting-edge contributions in cardiac science for Sri Lankan born British Cardiologist

British cardiologist Dr Yanushi Dullewe Wijeyeratne gained international acclaim at the European Society of Cardiology Annual Congress 2025 in Madrid. Invited to chair sessions, deliver lectures, and appear on the ESC TV channel, she presented the latest research on atrial fibrillation, inherited arrhythmias, and lethal cardiac conditions.

British cardiologist Dr Yanushi Dullewe Wijeyeratne received international recognition at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Annual Congress 2025 in Madrid, held from 29 August to 1 September.
The congress, held alongside the World Congress of Cardiology, is the world’s largest cardiology conference, and this year marked 75 years of advances in cardiovascular science by the European Society of Cardiology. 
Dr Wijeyeratne was invited by the European Society of Cardiology to chair multiple scientific sessions at the congress, deliver lectures to a global audience, and appear on the ESC’s official TV channel. 
As a member of the faculty, she presented some of the latest advancement in the management of atrial fibrillation, discussed developments in the investigation of inherited arrhythmia syndromes, and chaired sessions on the management of lethal cardiac arrhythmias and inherited heart disease.
She also had the honour of meeting King Felipe VI of Spain, who praised cardiologists worldwide for tackling cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death globally, and for fostering international collaboration. 
Fifty-eight National Cardiac Societies were represented at ESC 2025, forming the foundation of the ESC’s work, alongside 49 Affiliated Cardiac Societies. 
Eminent cardiologists, globally recognised academics, and distinguished clinician-scientists from around the world discussed the latest advances in cardiology, shared from around the world discussed the latest advances in cardiology, shared knowledge, presented cutting-edge research, and promoted initiatives to improve heart health worldwide. 
Dr Wijeyeratne, BMedSci (Hons), BMBS, MRCP, PhD, is a UK National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Lecturer in Cardiology at City, University of London and St George’s Hospital, and a Senior Fellow in Interventional Cardiac Electrophysiology at Royal Brompton Hospital in the UK. 
Sri Lankan-born Dr Wijeyeratne graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2009 and is a past pupil of Bishops College, British School in Colombo, and the Colombo International School. 
She is the granddaughter of the late Dr Nissanka Wijeyeratne (Ex Cabinet Minister of Education, Higher Education and Justice) and the daughter of Mr & Mrs Anuradha Dullewa Wijeyeratne.
