While rescue and evacuation operations continue across the country, officials remain alert as predicted showers could pose challenges on the ongoing operations in the coming days.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Disaster Management Centre (DMC) Director Pradeep Kodippili said that ongoing rescue and evacuation efforts have not yet been affected by the rains.
However, he noted that discussions will be held if the expected showers begin to hinder field operations, stressing that teams are prepared to respond swiftly if conditions worsen.
According to the latest situation update, a total of 481 deaths and 345 missing persons have been reported as of 6.00 pm yesterday due to the severe weather conditions experienced since November 16.
The disaster has so far affected 506,680 individuals from 1,814,534 families across the island, the DMC added.
Furthermore, a total of 1,967 houses have been completely destroyed, while 50,173 houses have sustained partial damage.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department warns that several spells of showers are expected in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern and Uva provinces, as well as the Matale District.
Showers are also expected in other parts of the country after 1.00 p.m., while fairly heavy rainfall of over 50mm could occur in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle and Matara districts.
In addition, red notices for landslides have been issued for Kandy, Kegalle, Kurunegala and Matale districts.
In light of the situation, residents and travellers are urged to remain vigilant.
