The ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has been suspended with immediate effect due to the heightened armed conflict between India and Pakistan following the terrorist strike on tourists in Pahalgam, as per media reports.
Last night the match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals, played in Dharamsala was called off after just 10 overs of play as the stadium lights were turned off the fans were asked to vacate the stadium. Following air raid alerts in nearby Jammu and Pathankot, as per emergency protocols, Dharamsala was put under blackout.
The players are being taken out of the city by a special train, as over 27 airports have been shut down.
Meanwhile, foreign players are reportedly reluctant to continue playing in the remainder of the IPL matches due to security concerns. So far, 58 of the scheduled 74 matches have taken place. It is not known when the remaining 16 matches will take place, or will they be shelved altogether.
This is an unprecedented situation faced by the League, which is into its 18th edition. The cash rich and hugely popular T20 tournament had continued amid controlled conditions even during the global Covid pandemic period. But this time the disruption is at home and people are more concerned about country rather than cricket.
As far as brands’ investment in IPL 2025 is concerned, Adgully will be delving into the financial aspects in separate reports.
