Former Zambian President Edgar Lungu passes away

The former President of Zambia, Edgar Chagwa Lungu, has passed away, leaving behind a legacy of leadership and diplomacy that extended well beyond his nation’s borders.

During his tenure as President from 2015 to 2021, President Lungu maintained cordial relations with Sri Lanka and consistently demonstrated solidarity with the country at international forums. His administration welcomed diplomatic engagement and fostered strong bilateral ties, especially during times when Sri Lanka sought broader global support.

Sri Lanka’s former High Commissioner to Kenya Kananathan, shared a close professional rapport with President Lungu even before he came the Presidnet .Their relationship was marked by mutual respect and a shared commitment to strengthening ties between the two nations. Under Ambassador Kananathan’s diplomatic efforts, cooperation in areas such as trade, micro finance and renewable energy saw significant progress often with the personal encouragement of President Lungu.

Ambassador Kananathan expressed his sorrow over the passing of the former Zambian leader, stating, “President Lungu was not only a great leader to his people but also a sincere friend to Sri Lanka. His support and goodwill towards our country will always be remembered with gratitude.”
