CCTV footage of a teenage couple committing suicide at a hotel in Tangalle which had gone viral on social media, has revealed that the couple had committed suicide as they did not get a chance to marry over a birth certificate issue.
The Tangalle Police said the couple was found dead at a tourist hotel in Tangalle on Monday.
A senior officer said that the victims, a 20-year-old Tamil boy from Tangalle and a 17-year-old girl from Ambalantota had hung themselves inside the hotel room.
Police had found a letter allegedly written by the deceased man.
Accordingly, Investigations revealed that the young man was adopted by the owner of the hotel since his childhood and had been a long-time employee of the hotel.
It was reported that the victim had requested some documents including his birth certificate to get married after he fell in love with the girl.
However, it is alleged that the hotel owner deliberately did not give him all the documents including his birth certificate and kept him employed at the hotel.
According to investigations, the couple did not get a chance to marry due to the lack of the birth certificate and the couple were frustrated about it.
The young man had then gone to Ambalantota area, the day before the tragedy and had brought the girl to the hotel and then committed suicide.
The Tangalle Police said after the post-mortem, the bodies were handed over to the relatives. ()
