A senior doctor at the National Eye Hospital, Dr. Prasad Colombage yesterday requested not to expose children to direct sunlight and said even adults should avoid it as it may affect their eyes.

Addressing the media, he said it would damage the eyes if exposed due to direct sunlight.

The doctor advised people to wear sunglasses of good quality and also wear caps to prevent exposing their eyes to direct sunlight.

“Too much exposure to direct sunlight raises the risk of eye diseases and other problems, and a few of the eye conditions can be avoided by wearing sunglasses,” Dr. Colombage said.
Exposure to direct sunlight can cause vomiting, dizziness or fainting and it is normal and better to seek medical treatment from a doctor.

Therefore, the doctor advised adults and children to drink lots of water and fluids to prevent dehydration.
