Amidst reports of some fuel stations dispensing fuel outside the QR based system, Deputy Minister of Energy Arkam Ilyas said yesterday that the Ministry is monitoring fuel stations defying the QR system and that stern action will be taken against such fuel stations.
He told a news conference that fuel stocks supplied to fuel stations will be tallied with the fuel stocks issued through the QR system and action will be taken against fuel stations that have a large margin of deviation in stocks.
The Deputy Minister said the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) and private players will be informed of errant fuel stations to initiate action against them.
Responding to a question, Energy Minister Anura Karunathilake said the Government is not expecting to remove the QR system completely right now as it is essential to restrict fuel consumption and to minimise outflow of Dollars amidst fluctuating global fuel prices. He said however, the Government could consider increasing the fuel quota adding that a continuous fuel supply can be guaranteed as enough fuel stocks are available in the country and ample stocks have already been ordered.
