A total of 2,343 dengue cases has been reported in the City of Colombo as of yesterday. Mayor Vraie Cally Balthazaar said yesterday.
“Dengue continues to be one of the biggest public health challenges facing our city.
So far this year, 2,343 dengue cases have been reported within the Colombo Municipal Council limits. That accounts for 4.5% of all dengue cases reported across Sri Lanka.
Compared with previous years, we’ve also seen an increase in the number of dengue cases being reported each month during 2026,” the Mayor said in her latest social media post.
“Every single day, our Public Health Department carries out mosquito control activities across the city. Through these inspections, we’ve identified that construction sites, schools, government and private institutions, and places of worship are among the locations where mosquito breeding is most commonly found,” she said.
Narahenpita, Gothamipura, Thimbirigasyaya, Kirula, Kirulapone, Cinnamon Gardens have been found to be high risk areas in the City.
Modara, Mattakkuliya, Sammanthranapura, Kochchikade North, Nawagampura, Kochchikade South, Fort, Wekanda, Kuppiyawatta East, Kuppiyawatta West, Borella North have also been found to be somewhat risky areas.
The construction sites in Colombo has been the most risky areas as 32.4 percent of the total construction sites in the city have found to be breeding sites, 13 percent of schools in the Colombo city, 6.8 percent of the commercial sites , 7 percent of religious places and 6.2 percent of the open areas have found to be breeding grounds.
Earlier, the Mayor said the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) alone cannot clean up the city and support of other institutions and the general public is also essential. Commenting on the matter former Mayor of Colombo Rosy Senanayake said it is the duty of the CMC to clean up the city. “ The cleaning up was done during my tenure with the help of medical officers attached to the municipal council and we also managed to clean up the Beira Lake from time to time,” she said.
