Sri Lankan lady arrested in the Maldives for infanticide

• Her newborn found dead in a landfill

The Maldivian Police have started an investigation into an incident in which a Sri Lankan lady employed at a guest house in the archipelago nation for alleged infanticide, a spokesman said.

Maldivian Police spokesman Yoonus Sobah told Daily Mirror that the  Sri Lankan lady was arrested.

According to reports, the lady had secretly given birth and abandoned the newborn inside a bag, which was subsequently found at the landfill.   

“Tragically, the medical professionals who examined the baby concluded that the infant was already deceased at the time of discovery. In light of these concerning circumstances, law enforcement authorities have taken swift action and apprehended the woman while she was attempting to flee from the airport to Sri Lanka,” the reports said.
