A couple and five others were arrested after police raided a spa in Bandarawela that was secretly running a brothel — and found hidden cameras filming clients.
The raid took place last morning in Ellethota. Police say the couple had placed cameras in rooms to record sexual acts, stored the footage on phones, and sold the videos online to foreign buyers. Four women suspected of prostitution and another person were also detained. The couple remain in custody. Investigations revealed that secret cameras had been placed to watch the scenes taking place in rooms and recorded them in mobile phones by the couple running the brothel who are suspected of sharing the pornographic scenes on internet and sold to foreign organisations to earn money. Police said the scenes of men enjoying sex with woman had been clearly recorded on the mobile phones.
The couple managing the brothel included a 35 year old individual from Welimada area and a 40 year old woman from the Minuwangoda area. They had charged varying prices from Rs.4000 and Rs.8000 depending on the demand for the woman chosen by the customer.
Others taken into custody were women between 18 and 40 years of age from Jaela, Minuwangoda, Matale, and Welkimada areas.
Police had carried out the raid with the help of a decoy posing as an individual seeking the services of the brothel.
A senior police official said the suspects were referred to medical examination for venereal diseases and that the mobile phones belonging to the suspect couple would be handed over to the Computer Crime Investigation Division for examination and report.
A police team under OIC Bandarawela Division Special Investigation Unit CI Nishantha Gunatileka carried out the raid on the instructions of ASP Ruwan Fernando, SSP Mayura Perera DIG Laksiri Wijeratne and Uva Province Senior DIG Mahesh Senaratne.
