The move to form a grand opposition alliance to contest future elections seemed to be becoming a stalemate with National People’s Power (NPP) having informed the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and others that they are not prepared to contest future elections together.

Opposition MP Dilan Perera when contacted by the Daily Mirror said he and a group of MPs who have crossed over to the opposition after the economic crisis had begun talks to form a grand alliance to contest the future elections. “We have had discussions with NPP and SJB.  However NPP had informed us that they cannot contest elections together though they are prepared to work as one group in Parliament in the new year.,” MP Perera said.  “However we might contest further elections together with the SJB though matters have not been finalized yet. We have had three rounds of talks,” he added.  “There is a misunderstanding that we are to join SJB. It is far from being the truth.

We are only trying to work together and see whether we can form an electoral alliance,” he also said.
